In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly when you're looking at the Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi car key, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common feature across the audi q7 key 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.
