How Does Machine Espresso Work?

The machine espresso is made using precise pressure and filter technology that is awe-inspiring to create the coffee you enjoy. What exactly does it work?

Espresso is made by forcing hot water at high pressure through finely-ground coffee. The process is similar to making drip coffee but the major difference is in the pressure.

The Head of the Group

The group head is the portafilter that you place in the espresso maker when making it. It distributes water into the portafilter and regulates the pressure during the extraction. There are many different types of group heads, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Some are focused on temperature stability, some on pre-infusion capabilities, and still others are designed to control the lever. Some include a combination like the E61. This is a popular choice among baristas because it offers multiple advantages in a single package.

As you can see from the image above the head of the group is fitted with a variety of notches. The portafilter is placed in these notches, then turn the head around to secure it. There is also a gasket of rubber which is located inside the notches and helps create an airtight seal when you insert your portafilter into the machine. The notches on the head permit a precise position of the portafilter which is essential to ensure a consistent extraction.

Aside from allowing you to effortlessly insert your portafilter the group head is also responsible for maintaining an even temperature. It does this by cycling hot water through the brew basket, and around the portafilter, ensuring that it is always at the right temperature to extract. The Pump

Motorized pumps in espresso machines that rotate provide the nine atmospheric bar pressure needed for espresso extraction. This differs from manual piston machines that rely on a lever. The pressure is created by pumping water through a heat-exchanger and then through the ground coffee.

The Boiler

The boiler is the part that heats water to the ideal temperature to extract.
