How to Replace an audi a3 spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The audi a1 car key can start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of the Bosch model, which is what ours are. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi remote key because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission, as well as the rest of the audi car key's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a common feature across the audi car key cover 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.
