In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find particularly if you're looking at the Bosch unit which is what ours are. Alternately, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues with your car. It is a crucial part of the audi key programming's transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points. This is the same across the audi keyless go 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.
